“What? You’re going, AGAIN? Don’t you want to go somewhere else for a change?” We get this a lot when we say we are going to Disney (and sometimes don’t even tell people we are going), but recently it has gotten me thinking a little bit more about why we always choose Disney for family vacations or even for quick weekend getaways.
Even before we were Annual Passholders, we typically went to Walt Disney World at least once a year. A couple of times, we even went down twice. Obviously, Disney World is a lot of fun to most, but I think there are a few things besides all the fun that make it our go-to place to take a break.
- Work hard, play hard! This is our motto. When we go, we take a break from everyday life. Life is stressful, and we are all busy. My husband often travels for work, and I teach at a Title I school where I often stay late and do things outside school hours supporting my students. My daughter is also busy with school and her crazy softball and basketball schedule. When we go to Disney, we forget about all our worries and just have fun!
- Pools! My daughter has an allergy called cold urticaria which means she is allergic to the cold, so things like camping and swimming are unsafe for her. Unfortunately, swimming is one of her favorite things to do, but because of her allergy, she doesn’t get to swim much in our area because the water is simply too cold. In Orlando, however, all the pools are heated (to 82 degrees) which makes swimming possible for her almost every month of the year.
- Food! We all eat a little differently in my house, and Disney is amazing at accommodating food preferences and allergies. There are always gluten free options along with vegetarian and vegan options. Once at ‘Ohana, I asked what was vegetarian since it was a family style meal that mainly consisted of meat, and a cast member came out to make sure he knew exactly what my dietary needs were and then brought out plates that were just for me. It was no problem for the chef and no extra charge. It’s simply the Disney way.
- Festivals! We love Epcot for all the festivals it offers. Each one is different and has fun things for our entire family. There are often scavenger hunts, concerts, and more food and drinks than one could ask for during each festival. The Flower and Garden Festival is beautifully decorated, and the Food and Wine Festival brings in more countries to experience. The Festival of the Arts allows one to experience various types of art (Broadway music, interactive art, and more), and the Festival of the Holidays provides a fun way to see how other cultures celebrate around the holidays.
So, yes, we do go to Walt Disney World often, and yes it may seem like too much for some people, but I promise every trip is different than the last, and it’s always magical. We enjoy it together as a family, as a couple, and with friends. It truly is our happy place and our home away from home.
